Grave relief.

Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek

Summary

The relief is made of white, probably Pentelic marble. The lower right hand corner and the two side acroteria with the corners of the pediment are missing, along with the right arm of the woman and part of the right arm of the man. Heavy scratches on the surface of the man.

A Visible Induced Luminescence examination reveals single, luminescent pigments equally spread out on the background, indicating the use of Egyptian Blue.

Description of object

A pediment with three acroteria projecting over the architrave on which is inscribed the names of the principal figures. To the right a woman is seated on a diphros with a cushion, her legs crossed and her feet resting on a stool. She wears the chiton and himation draped over the back of her head. Her hair is combed upwards in the centre above her forehead. To the left a mature man is standing looking at the woman. He has a mantle draped around him the folds of which, falling from his left shoulder, he holds with his left hand. He shakes hands with the woman, in the background between the two, and rendered in very low relief stands a woman of which only the head and shoulders are visible. She wears a short-sleeved chiton, and holds a large box in her hands.
