Attic votive relief

Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek

Summary

The relief is made of white marble, probably Pentelic. Five figures are rendered in high relief, and the bearded man on the right is leaning on a stick which was originally painted on.

Description of object

Relief for insertion into a stele. On the left side a large fragment has splintered off leaving only part of the small worshipper, and also the face of the veiled woman seems to have broken along a mica vein. The lower face of the bearded man, the right hand of the veiled woman and the right arms of the young man and the young woman are missing. The young man’s arm had been fastened with a pin. Small chips off the edges of the relief and off the drapery of the garments.

On the lower frame five figures are placed in high relief, the four of equal size and importance, the fifth very much smaller. The size and posture of the four figures mark them as divinities, a young and an elder man flanking the two women. The bearded man on the right was leaning on a stick in his left armpit, which was originally rendered in paint.
